Teen Girl's Room Before and After

Does anyone remember this room?   You know, the room I started over a YEAR ago...well it's done...well, I'm never really done, but it's basically sort of finished :).  I know all you designers/decorators out there know what I mean...done until the next Pinterest or magazine pic makes me go a whole new direction.  Anyway, here's my daughter's "finished" teen room.  (If you haven't been following along, you can read about the process herehere and here).

Here's a little peek at what it was before... a little shabby chic with pale green walls, vintage linens and soft pink accents...it was so sweet.

Ok...back to the teen room...I basically used all the furniture from before, with the exception of the gold Target side table and just painted the walls.  There's lots of cheap in this room...everything from the found iron bed, to the valance (which is simply a table runner from Homesense that I just cut in half), to the chair that a friend gave me (thanks Deb!) to the thrift store dresser and desk.  The window valance will probably change... a little too bright for a teenager in the morning...but until I find something I really like, they'll stay.  All the artwork I made...and the pompoms below are super cheap and add some dimension and texture.

Toronto Artist, Marlene Pape

I was at an art show last night in Toronto at the Art Square Gallery where my friend, Marlene Pape, is showing her art.   Marlene has been painting professionally since 2003 and  sells her art all over the world.  Our kids went to PS together so it's been a few years since I've seen her.  (Our kids are now finishing high school.  How did that happen?) We used to drop the kids off at school and then she'd run home and paint.  Marlene is such a talent and It was so nice to see her again.  This show is called "Reflections", and will be on display at this location until
December 1, 2014.  If you are in Toronto you should check it out.
For more information about her show you can go here.
This is just a little taste of what you'll see.

Basement Blitz - Before & After Teen Boy's Room

As some of you know, we had a film crew in our house a couple of weeks ago filming a pilot for a TV series (so not a TV show yet but maybe one day!). Since my husband is a director, we were contacted about shooting a pilot and well, let's just say now we have a room in our basement. The show concept would feature the four Toronto champs from last year's Canada's Handyman Challenge that form a "reno dream team". So they decided to blitz a room in our basement and make it into a bedroom for my 17-year old son.  It was two days of madness but lots of fun, and of course, an amazing room at the finish!

One of the challenges this room had was hiding the electrical panel which is in the far corner and is one of the focal points.  So we came up with the idea of housing it behind a dartboard.  All you have to do is push on the frame of the dartboard and it opens up to the electrical panel.  What most people do is place a door here and I really didn't want that, because to me, it adds more attention to the area and everyone knows that the electrical panel is behind it.

Another focal point in the room was the door which is in the middle of an outside wall (above) and leads to the cold room under our front porch.  This door cannot be removed and is right in the middle of the room. Instead of drawing more attention to it by painting it out white, I decided to paint the door and the trim the same colour as the walls - Moonshine by Ben Moore.  The reno dream team then decided to put a guitar holder on it and an old broken skateboard.  I thought this was a great design idea because my son is really into skateboarding and guitar and the guys were able to use one of his broken skateboards.

My favourite thing in the whole space is actually the way you enter ... through a barn door!!   I've always wanted a barn door/loft door in my house so this was a great opportunity to try one.  Instead of going with a standard door, they decided to make me one and added their own touches.  I just love it!!!  This is a great way to make a space just a little different than the ordinary.  You can also see the door from the other part of the basement so it adds some visual interest at the end of the hall.

One other cool space they created was the desk area which is on the opposite side of the room. They used two existing shelves that my dad made for me about 30 years ago, and then cut an old door and fit it to go between the two bookshelves.  They also mounted one on the wall and placed the TV on it with some crazy lights behind it.  I love this idea.   In a society where we just throw everything out and start over, it was great to utilize what we had and re-purpose an old door.

So this is what the top floor of my house looked like during the filming...about $60,000.00 worth of cameras.

This is what the basement looked like before the carpenters arrived and I've also included a pic of what it looked like during the madness.  (I like pretty pictures so before pics are always hard for me to show but I realize people need perspective.)

Here's a pic of his upstairs bedroom before the move to the basement. (It was never usually this tidy!)

Leah Marlene - Remember that Name

Every summer we get together with our good friends and old neighbors,  Derry and Deanna, who now live in the US.   He is known as one of Canada's greatest rock guitarists, and is the lead guitarist and songwriter for Honeymoon Suite.  So it's not surprising that their daughter, Leah Marlene, has a beautiful and unique voice.  Like a true musician, Leah brings her guitar with her everywhere.   This is a pic of her on the beach - doesn't everyone bring their guitar to the beach?  It's great for us because we get lots of live acoustic performances, usually at night by candlelight!

Leah's been performing for many years (she's just 13), and is now doing live performances to open for her dad.

We're so proud of her!!
You can check them out performing together here.

Country Garden Tour

OK so I really don't know where to start with this garden except to say that it's pretty spectacular.  It's one thing to like gardening and it's quite another thing to know exactly where to place everything in a garden. I mentioned recently that I was up north in Clarksburg, ON checking out some art galleries and antique shops. One of the artists, Cynthia Marsh, from Marsh Street Gallery, let me have a tour of her garden.  (She also happens to be my sister's art teacher).

This is a beautiful English garden with a bit of whimsy mixed in.  I love how Cynthia uses old found artifacts and existing structures in her garden design. (
I took these pictures in bright light and with an iPhone, so I hope I do it justice).

Enjoy the tour!

Cynthia uses lots of iron throughout the garden, including the iron bench surrounded by peonies, the iron door built into the stone wall, the antique iron bird feeder and the light on the shed, to name a few.

I love the formal look of the wall of Emerald Cedars and statue above, and the casual look of the clematis growing over the arbor below.  This garden has a sophisticated yet relaxed feeling which is my favourite kind of design - inside or outside.

Here's a close-up - pale pink Oriental Poppy.

Thanks for the tour, Cynthia!!
If you'd like to go on a tour of her garden or other gardens, just go here for more details.

Art Gallery Tour

As promised, here's a little taste of the art I saw this weekend in Clarksburg, ON, which apparently is becoming known as "Artsburg".   I just love how quaint this little town is.  All of the galleries are right next to each other, and what I really love is that some the artists are there to discuss their art.

First up is the Marsh Street Gallery owned by the very talented artist, Cynthia Marsh.  She's also an avid gardener, so I was able to get a garden tour in as well.
Wow what a garden!

Next up, I went to the Matilda Swanson Gallery.  I love this art by Anna Green and the one directly below it by Bertie.  This part of the world is full of beautiful landscapes, apple orchards and ski hills, so it's interesting to see how it inspires all of these artists in very different ways.

My next visit was to Loft Gallery owned by  another very talented artist, Debra Lynn Carroll.  Her paintings are mainly large textured landscapes done in oil, and her
studio is in the back so sometimes she's working on one.

Canada has many artistic destinations, and this little Ontario town is a perfect example.
If you can, stop by this summer.

I'm going to post my pics of
Cynthia's garden soon.

Using a Suzani in Decor

I've been a big fan of Suzanis for a long time now, and am thinking about doing something like the above in my teen daughter's room.  (She's after me every day about her room, so I better decide soon).  You can purchase a Suzani quite reasonably on e-bay, and they range from $20.00 - $200.00 depending on the size.  You can use them as cushions, headboards, throws, rugs, canopies, art, etc. etc.  They're a great way to inject some art and drama into any space.  Here's some of what I've sourced for you to show you how you can use them.  (All of these pictures are via Pinterest, and I have put sources if they were available).

I first fell in love with Suzanis when I saw this photo (below) in House and Home a few years back.  I love the purple, pink, yellow and taupe colour combination - gorgeous!

Below is Suzani inspired crib bedding and an outdoor rug from Rosenberry Rooms.
